Since 1998: The laptop.lk Story

Select any line to jump to that moment.

In 1998, most Sri Lankan homes did not have a computer. The ones that did had beige boxes that hummed, took a full minute to start, and connected to the internet by screeching down a telephone line. Buying one meant trusting a shop to tell you the truth about a machine you had no way of judging for yourself.

That last part hasn’t changed at all. And it’s the reason laptop.lk exists.

Where it started

laptop.lk opened its doors in 1998, at a moment when personal computing in Sri Lanka was still finding its feet. There was no established playbook for IT retail here. What there was, in abundance, was uncertainty: about specifications, about warranties, about whether the machine you carried home was the machine you had been promised.

We built the business around removing that uncertainty. Sell genuine products. Explain them honestly. Stand behind them afterwards. It is not a complicated strategy, but in this industry it has never been the easy one.

Over the years that approach earned something we don’t take lightly: in Sri Lanka, the name laptop.lk became synonymous with computer needs, both online and in-store.

Growing into IT Galaxy

As Sri Lanka came online, demand rose sharply — and it changed shape. Customers no longer wanted a laptop; they wanted a choice of laptops, side by side, from every major brand, in one place. At the time, no such thing existed here.

So in 2012 we established IT Galaxy (Pvt) Ltd, a multi-branded laptop outlet bringing the world’s leading manufacturers under one roof. It was the first store of its kind in the country.

Walk into our showroom today and you’ll find HP, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, MSI, and Apple among the brands on display — each section designed and branded to the precise specification of the manufacturer itself. That detail matters more than it sounds. It means what you are looking at is the real thing, presented the way the maker intended, not a lookalike arranged to resemble one.

What we actually sell

Our range has grown well past laptops. Today we carry notebooks, branded desktops, monitors, printers, components, peripherals, and accessories — a complete portfolio for home, study, gaming, and business.

What we don’t sell is just as deliberate. No used machines. No refurbished units dressed up as new. No grey-market imports arriving without a manufacturer’s warranty behind them. Every product on our shelves is genuine, and every warranty is the manufacturer’s own.

The part that happens after you pay

Anyone can be pleasant to a customer holding a wallet. The test of a technology retailer is what happens six months later, when something stops working.

We built our reputation on that second conversation. Our well-trained staff assist customers through whatever they need, and our service doesn’t end at the close of a sale. We operate our own service centre in Colombo 4, with both carry-in and on-site service available.

And for our laptops, we offer something we’re quietly proud of: free after-sales service support from our professionally certified staff for the second and third year. Not a discount on service. Not a service plan you pay extra for. Free.

Trusted. Genuine. Reliable.

Three words, and each one is a commitment we can be held to.

Genuine is the simplest to verify: authentic products, official manufacturer warranties, no exceptions. Reliable is what our service centre and our after-sales support are for. Trusted is not ours to claim — it’s earned across twenty-five years of customers who came back, and who sent their families and colleagues to us.

That trust is also why we invest beyond the shop floor. Through our community initiatives, we work to put technology into the hands of Sri Lankan students who would otherwise never get near it. A company that has spent its life selling computers should understand better than most what happens to a child who never touches one.

Still the same promise

The machines have transformed beyond recognition since 1998. The screeching modems are long gone. What a laptop can do today would have seemed like fiction back then.

But the customer standing in front of a shelf, trying to work out whether they can believe what they’re being told — that person hasn’t changed at all. They’re who we opened for, and they’re who we’re still here for.
