25 Districts. 50 Students. 50 Laptops. 50 Opportunities. Laptop.lk and Lenovo Empower Sri Lanka's Future Talent
Investing in Sri Lanka's Future Through Technology In a powerful demonstration of how the private sector can partner with government to change lives, Laptop.lk, together with global technology leader Lenovo, has successfully completed a landmark national CSR initiative, providing 50 brand new Lenovo laptops to 50 deserving university students representing all 25 districts of Sri Lanka. The initiative was carried out in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister's Office, reflecting a shared national commitment to bridging the digital divide for the country's next generation of leaders, innovators, and professionals. A Nationwide Effort Rooted in Fairness What makes this initiative particularly meaningful is its scope and structure. Rather than concentrating support in a single region, the programme was deliberately designed to reach every corner of the island. Two students were carefully selected from each of Sri Lanka's 25 districts, ensuring truly nationwide representation. Selection was based on two key criteria: outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated financial need. This dual focus ensured that the laptops reached young Sri Lankans who had already proven their talent and drive, but who lacked the means to access the technology essential for modern higher education. For many of these students, the absence of a personal computer has long stood as a quiet but significant barrier, one that affects everything from research and assignments to online learning platforms and career preparation. This initiative directly addresses that gap, placing powerful tools for learning and growth into the hands of those who need them most. A Ceremony Marking a National Partnership The handover ceremony was held at The Address, Colombo, and brought together a distinguished gathering of government officials, corporate leaders, and international technology partners, underscoring the scale and significance of the initiative. Among those in attendance were: Mr. A.B.M. Ashraf – Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister Mr. Mohamed Ismail Famy – Chairman, Technocity Group Mr. Minhaj Farook – Director, Laptop.lk Mr. Naveen Kejriwal – Director, Lenovo Overseas Business Mr. Shekhar Karmakar – Regional Sales Head, Lenovo The presence of senior representatives from the Prime Minister's Office alongside Lenovo's international leadership team highlighted the initiative's standing as a genuine public private partnership, one built on a shared belief that access to technology should never be dictated by economic circumstance. More Than a Device: A Gateway to Opportunity For the 50 students who received their laptops, the moment carried significance far beyond the value of the hardware itself. A laptop, in the hands of a university student, becomes a gateway to higher education, to research and knowledge, to innovation, and ultimately, to opportunity. It enables participation in online coursework, access to global academic resources, the ability to complete assignments and projects to a professional standard, and the digital literacy that today's job market increasingly demands. By removing this barrier, Laptop.lk and Lenovo have not simply distributed equipment. They have extended a vote of confidence to 50 talented young people, affirming that their ambition and hard work deserve to be matched with the right tools to succeed. Our Commitment to a Stronger Sri Lanka At Laptop.lk, we hold a firm belief at the core of everything we do: a student's potential should never be limited by their financial circumstances. This initiative is a direct expression of that philosophy in action. By placing the right technology into the hands of deserving young people across the country, we hope to give them not just devices, but the tools, confidence, and support they need to pursue their ambitions, and in doing so, contribute meaningfully to building a stronger, more capable Sri Lanka. We extend our sincere appreciation to Lenovo, the Prime Minister's Office, and the Ministry of Education for joining hands with us to make this initiative possible. It is through partnerships such as this, where corporate responsibility, government vision, and industry expertise converge, that lasting, nationwide impact becomes possible. This initiative is part of a broader vision that Laptop.lk continues to pursue alongside its parent company, Technocity Group: using technology as a genuine equalizer in Sri Lankan society. Over the years, our CSR efforts, from equipping school computer labs under the Rebuilding Sri Lanka initiative to supporting digital literacy programmes island wide, have consistently centered on one conviction: that access to the right tools at the right moment in a young person's life can alter the entire trajectory of their future. The 50 students who received laptops through this programme now carry with them not only a device, but a renewed sense of possibility as they pursue their degrees, their careers, and their contributions to the country's development. As Laptop.lk looks to the future, we remain committed to expanding initiatives of this kind, continuing to invest in Sri Lanka's students, schools, and communities, and reaffirming our belief that technology, when placed in the right hands, has the power to transform not just individual lives, but the nation as a whole. 25 Districts. 50 Students. 50 Laptops. 50 Opportunities.A Future Empowered by Technology.
Since 1998: The laptop.lk Story
Sri Lanka has changed enormously since 1998 — and so has the technology in our hands. Here's the story of how laptop.lk grew from a single store into one of the country's leading IT retailers, and the one thing that never changed.
Rebuilding Sri Lanka, One Classroom at a Time
When Cyclone Ditwah devastated Sri Lanka in late 2025, the whole country was called on to help rebuild. This is how laptop.lk answered — by giving storm-hit schools their computer labs back.
Digital Wings: Giving Students Wings to Fly with Technology
Not every Sri Lankan student starts from the same place. Digital Wings is laptop.lk's initiative to close that gap — putting real IT resources into schools so every child has a fair shot at a digital future.
Laptop Specs Explained, in Simple Terms
Laptop Specs Explained, in Simple Terms Every laptop listing comes with a wall of letters and numbers: i5, 8GB, 512GB SSD, and so on. To someone who isn't in the industry, that wall can feel like a foreign language standing between them and a decision they need to make with confidence. Here's what those terms actually mean, without the jargon. Processor (CPU) Think of the processor as the brain of the laptop. It's what handles every task the machine does, from opening a browser tab to running a video call to rendering a document. You'll usually see it listed as something like Intel Core i5 or i7, or an equivalent from AMD. As a rough guide: an i3 handles everyday tasks like browsing, typing, and streaming without trouble. An i5 is the sweet spot for most students and professionals, comfortable with multitasking, office work, and moderate design or coding work. An i7 and above is built for heavier work: video editing, 3D design, or running multiple demanding programs at once. RAM (Memory) RAM is short-term memory. It's what the laptop uses to juggle everything you have open right now, browser tabs, documents, applications, all at the same time. The more RAM a laptop has, the more it can juggle without slowing down. 8GB is a reasonable minimum for general use, schoolwork, and browsing today. 16GB gives noticeably more breathing room for multitasking, design software, or heavier coursework, and is worth considering if the laptop needs to last several years. Storage (SSD vs HDD) Storage is where everything lives permanently: your files, your applications, your operating system. This is different from RAM, which only holds what you're using right now. An SSD (Solid State Drive) is faster, quieter, and more durable than the older HDD (Hard Disk Drive) technology, and it's what most new laptops use today. It's the difference between a laptop that boots up in seconds and one that takes over a minute. 512GB of SSD storage is comfortable for most students and general users; heavier users working with large files, like video or design work, may want more. Display Screen size is usually measured in inches, measured diagonally, with 14 and 15.6 inches being the most common for everyday laptops. Resolution describes how sharp the image is. HD is the older, lower standard; Full HD (1080p) is now the practical baseline for a clear, comfortable screen for reading, watching, and working. Graphics (GPU) Most laptops come with integrated graphics, built into the processor, which is enough for browsing, office work, and everyday study. A dedicated graphics card, listed separately from the processor, is only necessary for gaming, video editing, or 3D design work. If you're not doing any of those, integrated graphics will serve you fine and keep the laptop lighter and less expensive. Battery and portability Battery life is usually listed in hours, but real-world use is often shorter than the advertised number, since it depends heavily on screen brightness and what's running. For students moving between classes or professionals working outside the office, a laptop rated for 8 or more hours of battery life offers a genuine margin of comfort over a full day. Putting it together Not every spec matters equally for every person. A student writing essays and browsing for research doesn't need the same machine as someone editing video or running design software. The specs above are the ones worth checking first, because together, they tell you far more about how a laptop will actually feel to use than the price tag alone ever will.
