Two students sit the same exam. One has spent three years with a computer at home, a school lab, and a teacher who could show them how it all works. The other has seen a computer perhaps a handful of times. They’re asked the same questions, and we call the result merit.

That gap has a name — the digital divide — and closing it is the entire reason Digital Wings exists.

What Digital Wings is

Digital Wings is a CSR initiative powered by laptop.lk, dedicated to empowering the next generation through technology. Its tagline says it plainly: giving students wings to fly with technology.

The approach is direct. We provide essential IT resources — laptops, desktops, and printers — to students and teachers across Sri Lanka. Not as a one-off gesture, but as working equipment that becomes part of how a school teaches, every day, for years.

The aim is equal access. A student in a rural classroom should be able to learn the same skills, on the same kind of machine, as a student in Colombo. That is the whole idea.

Phase one: Parakum Maha Vidyalaya, Vavuniya

We launched Digital Wings at Parakum Maha Vidyalaya in Vavuniya, where laptops, desktops, and printers worth over Rs. 1 million were donated to the school.

Equipment on its own is just hardware. What mattered was who received it: students who now have machines to learn on, and teachers who now have the tools to teach with. Both sides of the classroom were equipped, because a lab without a trained teacher helps nobody.

Phase two: WP/GM Thihariya Mayurapada Kanishta Vidyalaya

Phase two took Digital Wings to WP/GM Thihariya Mayurapada Kanishta Vidyalaya, continuing the same mission of enhancing education through technology.

Beyond the equipment itself, this phase also supported ongoing school restoration and infrastructure development — because a computer needs a room, and a room needs a roof. Strengthening the building strengthens the learning that happens inside it.

Why a laptop shop cares about this

It would be easy for a technology retailer to treat digital inequality as somebody else’s problem. We see it differently.

We have spent nearly three decades putting computers into the hands of Sri Lankans. We know precisely what a good machine makes possible — a first job, a degree, a business, a way out. When a student never gets near one, that possibility simply never opens.

So Digital Wings isn’t charity bolted onto a business. It’s the same thing we do every day, pointed at the students who need it most.

Wings, not handouts

We chose the name carefully. Wings are not something you give someone so they can stand still. They’re what you give someone so they can go somewhere you will never see.

We don’t know which of these students will build the software, run the company, or teach the next generation. We only know that they can’t do any of it without the tools. Digital Wings continues, phase by phase, school by school.
